Aerial Drone Photography for Real Estate: What Australian Agents Need to Know

When aerial photography adds genuine value

Aerial drone photography is not appropriate for every property. For a terrace house in a dense inner-city suburb, aerial shots provide limited additional context. For a rural acreage, a beachfront home, a corner block with a large garden, or any property where position and land area are primary selling points, aerial photography is not optional — it is essential.

CASA licensing: what agents need to ask

In Australia, commercial drone operations require a Remote Pilot Licence (RePL) issued by CASA. This is not the consumer drone exemption for recreational flight. It is a formal qualification requiring training, examination, and ongoing currency.

Every Estate Acquisition drone operator holds a current CASA RePL and operates under an approved RPAS Operator Certificate. If you are booking through another provider, ask for their CASA credentials. An unlicensed operator flying for commercial purposes is operating illegally — and the liability falls on the person who hired them.

Restricted airspace in Australian cities

Large portions of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth fall within controlled airspace near major airports. Commercial drone operations in these areas require prior CASA authorisation via the Authorisation Manager system. Estate Acquisition handles all airspace authorisations before every booking. We will advise at the time of booking if your property requires additional lead time for airspace clearance.

What aerial photography shows that ground photography cannot

Aerial photography communicates three things that ground-level images cannot: scale, position, and context. Scale shows buyers how large the land area actually is. Position shows where the property sits relative to water, parks, schools, and infrastructure. Context shows what surrounds the property — a factor that significantly influences buyer decision-making.
